Also, I’ll keep content coming on here and publishing to many tutorial sites cos know I’ll have more time I guess… *sigh*… Help an arab out…

It’s Been a Good Long Week

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

And it’s not quite over, yet! This week I started a new contract at ESP (also known as Enrich Productions) working primarily on their main project called 1Click2Fame.com. It’s a really beautiful concept and one that I hope to help as much as I can in. If you’re not quite sure what the site’s about, here’s a quick blurb:

“The online talent contest where the UK’s best battle it out to win prizes and fame. You watch, you vote, you decide who wins our weekly prizes to take talent to the next stage.”

Yep, that was copy and pasted from the front page! (more…)

Breaking in to Ruby

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Well my residency at Google/YouTube/TangoZebra is now over and I’m moving on to newer and brighter things! I’ve got a month booked at Enrich Productions in London where I’ve been told I will be working with Ruby! Uh oh, my Ruby skills need some work, so it’s out with the old books and tutorials all weekend I think!

A few years ago I bought two books on Ruby, both from The Pragmatic Programmers. I’ve only just started reading the first one, Agile Web Development with Rails, but already it’s turning out to be well written. It’s a big book but the font’s a decent size so even a dyslexic like me can read it.

Well, hopefully anything I learn that’s of good use I’ll post back up here, the main thing to do now is to set up my iMac so it’s ready for web development!

Selling Out

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Today was a day for phone calls. I came in to the office at around 9am and then went up stairs for a heartly Google breakfast (they’re free by the way!). When I came back down to my desk, I think it may have been around 9:40am, I had five missed calls! And about seven emails. All from recruitment agencies, all wanting to fit me in some time or another with their clients. Crazy.

Well I guess it’s a bit of a blessing. I was a bit worried last week about whether I was going to bum around next week, but it doesn’t seem so. I’m just waiting for confirmation about a week working at Imagination in London. Then I’ve had offers from BBC for the following week, not forgetting Skype or MediaCom. And to top this off, today I had an interview with BSkyB, wow.

Looking for Contract Work

Monday, May 25th, 2009

My time at Google is nearing an end and it seems that while my department want to keep me on, Google believes that because of the economic climate that all contractors are to be let go rather than kept on, regardless of how good they do they’re job.

It’s a shame, over the past six months I’ve seen a number of great individuals leave because of this rule and while it doesn’t make sense, I’m not angry about it.

You see Google will never be short of money, they literally have a hose pipe of funds being pumped into them through advertising and it’s amazing how far they’ve come. So I guess the reason behind this is to uphold a sort of facade to the rest of the world that while they’re doing bad, a company as unlikely to be touched by the recession as Google is also doing bad too.
